Martin Whitehead

After a PhD studying the sounds produced by the ears of vertebrates, from frogs to humans, Martin did basic and clinical research in US tertiary-care medical-school ENT Departments. On switching to veterinary medicine, he worked in mixed farm, equine, zoo and pet practice for over 15 years. He is now a Clinical Director of a 15-vet UK companion-animal veterinary hospital. His clinical work includes exotic-pets, including referrals, zoo work, companion-animal internal-medicine, including referrals, and running a radioiodine unit treating hyperthyroid cats. Martin is an RCVS-recognised Advanced Practitioner in small-animal medicine, and the International Director of the Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine Association.

Susana Magalhães

Susana Magalhães is Coordinator of the Responsible Conduct in Research Unit (URCR), at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) at the University of Porto. With a PhD in Bioethics from the Portuguese Catholic University, she is a researcher in the areas of Narrative Medicine and Ethics and Research Integrity and Assistant Professor at Fernando Pessoa University.

Member of the Ethics Committee of the Porto Hospital Center and the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences; Member of the INESC-TEC Ethics Committee; Member of the Founding Group of the Portuguese Scientific Reproducibility Network; Member of the European Society for Narrative Medicine (EUNAMES); Member of the Board of Directors of The Doctor as a Humanist (DASH) Organization. João Alves

João Alves completed his Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon in 2012. He works in the Guarda Nacional Republicana (Portuguese Gendarmerie), with the working dog population, where he dedicates himself to sports medicine and rehabilitation, helping these animals to reach their full potential. He completed his PhD in Veterinary Sciences at the University of Évora in 2021, on the study of intra-articular therapies in the treatment of osteoarthritis. In 2022, he became a European Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. In addition to osteoarthritis, he is interested in working and sporting dog medicine, photobiomodulation and exercise. He is the author and co-author of dozens of scientific articles and presentations in these fields.

Ângela Martins

Ângela Martins, graduated in Veterinary Medicine (FMV-ULisboa, 1991) and PhD in neurorehabilitation (FMV-ULisboa, 2023). Graduated from the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Dipl. ECVSMR, 2023). Founder of the Arrábida Veterinary Hospital, the Arrábida Animal Rehabilitation Center (CRAA), the Lisbon Animal Rehabilitation and Regeneration Center (CR2AL), and the Animal Rehabilitation and Regeneration Center of the North (CR2AN).

Professor of Animal Rehabilitation and Emergency and Intensive Care at the Lusófona University, Lisbon. Coordinator of the Veterinary Nursing Course at IPLUSO. Certified instructor of the “Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner” CCRP by the University of Tennessee.

She participated in international congresses on veterinary and human rehabilitation medicine. She has spoken at conferences in Portugal and abroad on the topic of animal rehabilitation. She published articles in Q1 journals, in book chapters, authored posters and other scientific works in the area of functional rehabilitation. 

Ana Ribeiro

Ana Ribeiro has a Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Lisbon (FMV-UL) in 2009. Specialized training in Animal Rehabilitation Medicine (CCRP - Canine Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner) from the University of Tennessee in 2013. Expert Course in Basics of Physiotherapy and Animal Rehabilitation (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, 2017). Clinical director of AniCura Restelo Veterinary Center since 2019, a center dedicated exclusively to the area of rehabilitation medicine.

Manuel Sant'Ana

Manuel Magalhães Sant’Ana is the leader of the EviEdVet project. He is a veterinarian and European expert in animal welfare (Dipl. ECAWBM (ASWEL)). He is a researcher in animal ethics and veterinary professional deontology at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon and has, in recent years, dedicated himself to evidence-based medicine. He was a Newman Fellow in Veterinary Ethics, at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin, Ireland, and Vice-President of the Professional and Ethical Council of the Portuguese Veterinary Order.

Daniel Costa

Daniel Costa is a researcher in Social Sciences and postdoc on the EviEdVet project. He has a master's degree in Social, Work and Organizational Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto and a PhD in Sociology from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto. He has professional experience both in organizational environments and in research project contexts, having dedicated himself within the scope of EviEdVet to studying how scientific evidence is perceived by veterinary medicine students and teachers.

Nuno Franco

Nuno Franco is co-leader of the EviEdVet project. Graduated in Biology and Geology education (2003) and in Animal Biology (2007), with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2012). Researcher in the i3S Laboratory in Animal Sciences group in the area of animal welfare and in the assessment of methodological quality and reproducibility in animal experimentation, having also studied and published in areas such as the sociology of science, history of science, science teaching and animal ethics. He is President-elect of ETPLAS, coordinator of RedeORBEA, Vice-President of SPCAL and member of the board of Animal Research Tomorrow.
