Manuel Magalhães-Sant’Ana

European veterinary specialist in animal welfare. Researcher in animal ethics and veterinary professional ethics at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon. Has been devoted in recent years to evidence-based medicine. He was a Newman Fellow in Veterinary Ethics, School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin, Ireland and has been, since 2016, Vice-Chair of the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Veterinary Order.

Nuno Henrique Franco

Licenciado em ensino de Biologia e Geologia (2003) e em Biologia-Ramo Animal (2007), tendo um doutoramento em Ciências Biomédicas (2012). Investiga no grupo de Ciências de Animais de Laboratório do i3S na área do bem-estar animal e na avaliação da qualidade metodológica em experimentação animal, tendo também estudado e publicado em áreas como a sociologia da ciência, história da ciência, ensino da ciência e ética animal. É Presidente-eleito da ETPLAS, coordenador da RedeORBEA, Vice-Presidente da SPCAL e membro da direcção da Animal Research Tomorrow.

Degree in Education of Biology and Geology (2003), degree in Animal Biology (2007), and PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2012). Researcher in the Laboratory of Animal Sciences group at i3S in animal welfare and in the assessment of methodological quality in animal experimentation, having also studied and published in areas such as sociology of science, history of science, science teaching and animal ethics. President-elect of ETPLAS, coordinator of RedORBEA, Vice President of SPCAL and member of the board of Animal Research Tomorrow.

Isilda Rodrigues

Assistant Professor with Aggregation at the Department of Education and Psychology at UTAD. She has a Degree in Biology/Geology (teaching), a Master in Promotion and Health Education, and a Doctorate in Education and an Aggregation in Science Didactics since 2015. Researcher at the Center for Educational Research and Intervention (CIIE) of the Faculty of Science of Education and Psychology of the University of Porto. Her areas of research are History of Science, Science Didactics and Health Education. Vice-director of the Basic Education Course at UTAD. Appointed UTAD Student Liaison Officer from June 2021.

George Stilwell

Degree in Veterinary Medicine and farm animal practitioner from 1986 to 2000. He has a Doctorate in Veterinary Sciences on the “Assessment and control of pain in cattle” and a Specialist Diploma by the European College in Bovine Health Management. He is Associate Professor with Aggregation at FMV-ULisboa since 2000, where he teaches" "Clinic of Livestock Species" and "Deontology and Bioethics". Guest lecturer at Massey University (New Zealand) 2018-2019. He leads the Animal Behavior and Welfare laboratory at CIISA-FMV. Founding member of the Associação Portuguesa de Buiatria. Member of EFSA working groups on cattle welfare and health. Member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Veterinary Order.

Karolina Domingues

Pharmacist, Master and PhD in Pharmacology from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil. She is proficient in Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis. She taught courses on Systematic Review and Meta-analysis aimed at undergraduate students. She has experience studying animal behavior as well as behavioral changes caused by pharmacological and non-pharmacological manipulations. Her research interests include bibliographic surveys and analysis of the quality of scientific evidence for the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, neurobiology of laboratory animal behavior and sexual differences regarding the action of psychotropic drugs.

Filipa Lopes

Degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (2018) and master's degree in applied microbiology from the Catholic University of Portugal. Her master's thesis in animal ethics at the Institute of Bioethics of the Catholic University of Portugal (2020). She also has a postgraduate degree in “Promotion of well-being” from the University Institute of Psychology, Biosciences and Education (ISPA-IU) (2021). Her research interests include ethics and animal welfare.

Daniel Costa

Researcher in Social Sciences. Master’s in social, Work and Organizational Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. PhD in Sociology from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto. He has professional experience in organizational environments and research project contexts, showing an appetite and skills for empirical, critical, and reflective research. His interests include: Social Theory; Education and Pedagogy; Critical Theory; Complexity and Social Systems; Epistemology; Discourse and Power; Work and Organizations; Qualitative methodologies; Social and community psychology; Social and Solidarity Economy.

Carla Martins

B.Sc. in Microbial and Genetics (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), M.Sc. in Human Evolution and Biology (Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry (University of Montreal).

Her research has primarily focused on the identification and characterization of the molecular defects and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying different genetic neurodegenerative disorders and inherited metabolic diseases. Her experience, which included the study of the first animal (mouse) model of MPS IIIC, a rare genetic disorder, further deepened her interest in animal well-being and ethics, as well as in methodological quality, in research.
